Swinging arm removal

Post by Adventure b4 Dementia »

Hello
I have a 1957 18s and I am striping the frame ready for powder coating. Can anyone tell me how you remove the swinging arm please? There seems to be an oil filler where the bolts would be on any other bike?

Thanks a lot!

Swinging arm removal

Post by mirangi »

I got mine out with a piece of threaded rod past through the centre, a socket of the right size to pass through the bushes on one end and a bit of heavy wall plastic pipe bigger than the spindle on the other end with a large washer and a nut.

Put on a bit of pressure on this then heated the whole unit with a heat gun and kept tightening the nuts and it all came apart.

Oh yes, soaked the whole thing with WD40 from a spraycan for a few days, especially up inside the frame.

Reversed the process once the new bushes were in place.

Hope this helps

Thanks Steve

The swinging arm movement is great, the only reason I wanted to split it was to powder coat the frame. I am now thinking of just shot blasting and getting it sprayed intead as I don't think I want to dismantle it. Thanks

No No No! Do it properly or it will end up with blasting grit in all it's important little places, they don't like it up 'em.
It isn't a complicated job to remove it, just requires a little application of effort. The replies above have shown you the way, and if you don't do it right no-one here will buy a bike from you

Thanks :-)

Ok I dont know how close Borden in Hampshire is to you but I always use Goldburn Coatings, they do a lot of work for the MOD, de-grease parts, shot blast, prime, (most important), then powder coat. the finish is superb and the price very competitive. I have used them on a number of bikes with no complaints. They have a web site.
