Picture: 1947 AJS 18 Pillion seat remains

Description: This is on the fender of my Model 18 1947 AJS. Does the skeleton left look like an original, or a US aftermarket? I can find no close up pictures of an original to know. I know the tail light on this bike is diffrent than the UK version.

The original pillion eat offered was pt. no.011291. Which is what we call a bum pad. Not the type with 4 coil springs. It had 4 screw fitings. If you can access the archives it is pictured in the 1950 parts list. Most repro pads are of the same design. The guard does appear to have DIY bum pad reinforcing strips. The paintwork has rusted more than the original paintwork.

Rob, thanks the 1950 one is the look I’m going for. It is a lot squarer than the ones that appear to be on the market now.

That rear carrier is the real deal as fitted to WD bikes and civilians. Hard to find now too. As Rob H says, the reinforcements are an add on by a previous owner. The rear light looks like a German type and would go nicely on my Zundapp if you don’t want it! Plenty of period pattern lamps and brighter modern types available too.
