Really useful. Like many others I suspect, I was fitting the oil seal the wrong side of the holder. All is now clear, especially when used in conjuction with the late lamented Biscuit's cutaway photo.

My G3 was supplied with the speedo drive in a box and a simple spacer in its place. I've been thinking about fitting the drive, this article has probably saved my neck, thank you.

Unfortunately I spoke to J Allen (author) after this happened to me on my M31. Luckily I was upright when the wheel locked up for a fraction of a second before rotation continued, Upon investigation I was lucky as I have the QD rear wheel. The damage was the bearing ring stripping the threads in the hub. I managed to ride home and all is now repaired with a second hand hub and I have removed the crown wheel in the speedometer gearbox so it can never happen again. A £15 gps cycle speedometer is a much safer option than the original design which is flawed. The cause was a worn speedometer gearbox which must have jammed and started to unscrew the bearing ring causing the lock up. You have been warned.
