Lockwiring spring links is common practice in racing (if soft rivet links are not available).However, an endless chain is a better solution in this instance.

Although I have never seen/used it ,I assume you actually wire the spring to the side plate so the wire goes on the inside face of the sideplate, then round the outside which includes the spring link.
