Head steady bracket

Post by chrisb »

Hello all,
Could anyone tell me if the head steady bracket on my 1949 , 18 rigid goes in the middle of the frame top tube clamp or on one side of it, left or right?
Would appreciate some advice,
Regards Chris

Head steady bracket

My 51 G3L has a head steady which presumably has come from a 500 since they were not standard on 350s. The bracket goes to the left of the clamp on mine since the bracket, once on the rocker box, cannot go directly into the centre of the clamp. Note that the bracket is shaped (as Rob Harknett has pointed out elsewhere) such that it sits naturally to the left side of the rocker box bolts. Thick washers (spacers if you prefer) take up the slack. Of course, if it is completely different on a 49 500, someone will surely tell us soon...Edited by - REW on 18 Mar 2012 7:56:08 PM

Check the 49 parts lists, all the parts should be available from Club spares, I recall only one type for singles. It will only fit properly if fitted properly.

The clamp that fits on my top tube is offset a bit so that it fits without any spacers, but with the age of the machines it's likely someone made it up at some time.

Personally I fit some old inner tube round the top tube underneath the clamp.

It's pointless using rubber. It defeats the purpose!

Wilko

I have this feeling of deja vu, as we had this exchange once before.

I understand your point (and ITMA's). Of course, by the time it's all fastened up the rubber is so thin and compressed it's more like a contraceptive sheath in thickness and serves no useful (or adverse) purpose.

It's just my fad.

ITMA

I'll bowl 'em, you bat 'em.

Just what I I was thinking when I posted the reply; but I prefer redheads.

Altho........

After 36 years wed 10 April a change might be as good as a rest.

Only kidding.
