Anyone got a pinion puller spare (or an opinion)!

Post by uktom77 »

I'm trying to separate my timing pinion ('52 18s) from it's shaft. Does anyone have a pinion puller they want to be parted from (for a fee) or (here we go) have an opinion on them??

I've tried adapting a 3 leg puller but that pulled itself apart as I had to grind down the feet to fit behind the pinion. Also tried applying heat but it's still defeating me.

I read a thread about dropping the bush out through the cases but the teeth look like they are proud (could be an illusion) and anyway presumably you still have to get the pinion off.

So, who's got an opinion (or puller) to share.

  (B-2151)
EXTRACTOR; TIMING GEAR £20.77

Is this the part you mean?

I've heard that these may not be up to the job bearing in mind the engine I have has been sat for some time. Don't want to spend £25 and still end up no closer to the goal.

That's the one.
cant speak for the ones JLS sell but I have had my one for decades.

The pinion should not be hard to remove no matter how long its been on.

They have to be seated properly, sometimes a side ways tap is need to tuck its rim behind the pinion.

Outside of personal experience I take all such stories of dud kit with a pinch of salt, mostly its down to cackhandedness and poor tool use.
Which is why I never lend tools but will do it for you.
besides if you bought a used one it would be from JLS anyway?

It's sounding more like a good investment after all. Thanks for the offer but I don't want to be the cackhanded one who ruins a prized tool.

Thanks, I will order one tonight.

Mine is a prized tool in that not only is it the gen kit but was a gift from an ex Plumstead man who one day left a note on my AJS asking if I would like his bin load of new AMC spares, bits and bobs

Those were the days.

A previously well lubricated, heated and attacked with various ill-fitting make-shift tools, pinion popped off tonight with the correct tool.

Thanks again for the offer ITMA, most appreciated. I'm now equipped to tackle more of those tricky little blighters!

Anyone any idea who JLS are (not the boy band) as I need one of these and the club spares are out of stock. Or is there another tool or method that would remove the timing pinion from a HW single?
