Sorry my friends I need your help. A friend has a AJS engine number 53/20 17486...who knows the relative position on the frame of the frame number? Could be A2266? Is he speedometr integrated in the main ligth or is it separated? Thanks

For the frame number, have a look under the seat on the right (offside) side just in front of where the top tube meets the down tube. You'll probably need to remove the seat to see it.

There's some photos here that might help.

A2266 would be a 1955 frame.
A 1953 frame would have no A prefix. The number would be 89501 or higher. However as theres a gap in records, I don't know the 1954 start number.

My 53 AJS has an A prefix, but the number is very low, ie 'A' and then only 3 digits.Manufactured in may '53. And i have a proper dating certificate.

The speedo is completely seperate from the light.

I understand that bikes built in May and Aug '53 would have been documented by the factory as '52 models.
The '53 model would have been introduced in Sept, after the factory's annual shutdown in Aug.

have you got that right Sprid? If engines were stamped up by the factory in the Sep. with the following years year number then wouldnt machines manufactured in May and Aug. 53, have the engines stamped as a 53 rather than 52? sorry if Im being picky
