Hopefully it's the bore that's been honed
I work on 3 to 4 thou per inch of bore dia. measured at an unworn part of the barrel for safety's sake.
Are they new rings or the old rings going back in?
The std 500's bore dia is 3.25" (give or take) so I'd expect to achieve 10 to 13 thou gap.
With your extra 5 thou (your 18 minus my max 13) I would fit new rings in view of the work involved. Also depends on the mileage you expect to get out of it in the next year or two - after all, you say the bike is 459 years old

8/12 thou is about whats correct. Asumming the piston grooves are nice and clean. Personaly I would not worry about the gap being bigger. Better than it being small, theres a step at the top of the barrel, or rings not fitted properly, ( some state TOP. ) The top 2 rings are not peged are they? so just make sure ring gaps dont line up.

The new piston will/should have new rings in which case the next option is a rebore oversize and another new piston. Tch!
Nothing wrong wi' a bit o' slap that can't be sorted next winter.

Jeff,
I recently fitted new rings to my 500 which is on a standard bore. Out of the box the ring gap on the top two was .009" which opinion seemed to think was a little tight. I took them out to .014" with an India stone and all seems fine with good compression and minimal oil burning.
When I measured the old rings the top one was at .034" which probably accounts for the previous compression ratio of 2:1!!
