wheel bearings

Post by ktofthewoefig »

Bikes been sitting for many decades and ive tried washing the old grease out of the front wheel bearings with paraffin. They still sound a bit gravelly. Would prefer to take the bearings out the hub to clean them properly but I ve read that knocking the bearings out of the hub usually ends up with them being destroyed. Is this right or can they be removed safely with out damage.
Thanks in advance
Steve

The gravelly feel may be from the grease drying hard as a rock. I have removed many wheel bearings & heat the hub to boiling temp over a camp stove. I also use drivers that fit over the axle to avoid damaging ends or threads. Cheers, Don.
