rear hub spacer

Post by ktofthewoefig »

Ive damaged the spacer, between the two bearings on the rear hub of my 55 18S, using it to hammer out the bearings.
Spares number is listed as 021586, Spacer 2 and 9/16th inch long between the two bearings of rear hub.
Two things; firstly I cant find it listed at AMC or jampot and secondly Ive measured the one Ive got and it measures 2 and 1/4 inch.
Anybodys help in sourcing part and explanation of differnece in sizes would be much appreciated

The 1955 first year of full width hub was only for that year. It should still be listed. Have you actualy got a 1955 wheel?? for that very first year it was metal pin in metal holes, no rubbers. I called on my 1955 G3LS ( brought 9 months oldin 1956 ) the rear wheel clonked and snatched at min speed. probaly way they updated it in 1956 with the rubbers

It seems to be a 55 wheel. I think by pins you mean the bolts you can see in the photo. Am i right in thinking there were rubber parts added to these to make the drive smoother.
Also Ive checked many of the spares books and they all say the spacer is 2 and 9/16.

Steve, I'm afraid you fallen foul of a common mistake in the parts lists. Frequently, when a part changed, the new number was given correctly but the description was not updated! So for rear hub bearing spacers we have 2 part nos.014706 (for the cotton reel type hub of 1954) and 021586 (for the first, and subsequent, full width hubs up to 1963). The length is given as 2 and 9/16" for both parts but this is incorrect. Part no 021586 is 2 and1/4 "long and should be the correct part for your hub. You will find the same error if you look up the lengths of the rear spokes for the '54 and '55 rear wheels - they are both given as the length of the spokes in the cotton reel type hub!!
