I have read that there was little consistency at the factory on paint mixes but have found that Rover Damask Red is a reasonable match.

Why not take a piece e.g. Oil Tank Heat Shield around to your local friendly car body shop or even Halfords and ask them to put it on their colour analyser.
They should also be able to make up some paint for you.
That way will ensure the paint you use should match what is already there even if its not the one its supposed to be if you see what I mean.

Think I found a source for the red - it's called 'cardinal Red' and is available in aerosol from http://www.rsbikepaint.com I will let youi know how it looks when done. Going a bit off-topic, I recently replaced my ancient mechanical regulator with a modern solid state job (thanks to those who helped re the wiring!) to power the 6v lights. I think though that the battery may need replacing and wondered if anyone could recommend a suitable gel/absorption type? Thanks!
