1920's AJS - Hello From Peterborough
Hello all , its my first time on here and am hoping someone maybe able to help ... I am due to aquire this bike soon and know next to nothing about AJS motorcycles . I would be very grateful if someone could tell me the model please ( im told its a 1926 bike )as well as approx value for insurance purposes as I have no idea .
[img]][/img]
The bike is in condition as shown in the picture but has not run for about 10 years . I have been trying to find AJS values based on condition but not had much success .
I would be very interested to find out what its estimated current value is and what it could be worth if running and restored as this will probably be the deciding factor on wether i keep it or not ( I have 2 other resto projects on the go and time & money doesnt stretch easily 3 ways )
I look forward to your replies .
Cheers ... David

Looks very like a 250 sidevalve I have dated 1928, but I don't think this was being made in 1926 so it is probably the 350 sidevalve. Seems to be in pretty good condition, certainly better than mine, so it seems a shame to respore it other than getting it running.

Note the unbraked front wheel Clive, I have dated this approx 1924 350, but need all numbers to positively date all the parts.
The AJS 2 3/4h.p. model 12 SV was introduced in 1928. In 1930 the engine became OHV, in the late 30's their was also the de lux model 22 version. You should be aware. In1925 a year code letter was used. It is E, 1926 G, 1927,H, 1928 K, 1929 M, 1930, R, 1931, S, 1932 T, fromthen on the first 2 digits of the year 33, 34 etc. It is custom to use the model year letter prefix, hence the 1928 2/3/4 h.p is known as K12 The model year for the K12 was September 1927 to end of Aug. 1928, 1928 models were availabe for sale at and after the November 1927 motor cycle show.

Apart from your obcession with what its worth what else do you want to know?
Its a nice original bike in good nick, with all accessories and rideable as is; its not a bike for the rider unusd to vintage bikes who will have to learn all over again to ride without decent brakes, a hand change and a multiplicity of levers as well as an oil pump to deal with.
It no longer has its original registration and I doubt its a one previous owner, one previously recorded most like; a little bit of thought calculates that if it was bought new by its "one owner" in 1925 at say 16, unlikely; that owner would now be at least 101.
I had one like it once and wish I still had it.
I would like to own that one.
Is that enough?
My nasty cynical side however suspects you haven't bought it yet and are fishing for a price to offer?
Feel free to correct me if I am wrong, in an equally robust fashion if you wish.Edited by - itma on 23 Jan 2011 5:36:04 PM

Thanks for the descriptive & frank reply .
No not fishing at all ... I am collecting the bike in the next few weeks and just want to know what to insure it for . I use Footman & James for my classic bike insurance and they have obviously asked what the bike is worth , and i dont know as the bike is coming to me from a family member.

In that case you can put whatever value you wish on it,the will only load your premium to suit, £6-7K would be about right.
I suggest you try Peter James for insurance, Footman are linked in some devious way to the Carole Nash axis of evil; [or should that be AXA of evil?]
see forums passim for spriddlers sad story
