Matchless G80S 1950: tail light
Hi Robi,
It would have been a Lucas 467/2. It has a backplate, a glass insert with red paint to the rear, and a chrome cover with two aperatures to the rear for the tail light and one to the bottom for the license plate illumination. The cover is held by a single sleeve nut.

Additional note: These were used from 1949 to 1953-ish before switching to the later plastic type.
Regards,

Yes used as car number plate lights, and can quite easily be converted to a rear lamp as suggested. I found a brand new boxed one at a jumble recently for £1. in a box considered junk, mainly car parts, on a bike stall.
