Magneto cover. 1949 AJS 18

Post by sandpitdean »

Hi all
I have just purchased a 1949 ajs 18 with some parts removed. The question is can anyone tell me how the magneto cover at the front of the engine is held on. I can see where it sits from the hole for the adv/ret cable but can't see what the 2 flat plates go over to hold it in place. they are too short to go over frame down tube which seems to be in a perfect spot. Am I missing an extra part here or does the plates clamp somewhere else.
Thanks, Dean

you are missing two U brackets that fit the down tube.
The flat plates fit between the shield and the tube, this is to spread the load and prevent splits in the shield

Hi Dean, I also have a 1949 AJS 18, but it is missing the Magneto Shield. Do you have photo or two, plus dimensions, so that I can make or find one? PM me if that is easier. I can then provide email address. Thanks Peter

Hi Sam, thanks. I see that now from his profile. Ok, I shall put the question out to a broader audience.
Can anyone help with the dimensions of the Magento Shield I need for my 1949 AJS 18? And the plates/U brackets I need.
Cheers, Peter
