Advance /Retard aka Ahead/Astern

My dad claimed that a Scott he had was able to change to running backwards when ticking over slowly. Apparently the only warning was a slight cough that was easy to miss. One day he gave it some throttle and dropped the clutch, the engine had reversed so he shot backwards and ran a policeman over !

I once had a yacht with an RCA Dolphin 2-stroke engine, originally developed by Harry Ricardo in the 30's and fitted to Shoreham fishing boats to help them punch into a foul tide or lack of wind in the harbour entrance.
To go astern one had to stop the engine, move an ignition timing lever and restart (hand crank) the engine 'backwards' .
With the reluctance of strokers to start when hot and the reduced efficiency of marine propellors in astern mode copious fenders, a fit crew and nerves of steel were essential.
