Yes but bootlaces and string are more useful than knackered single push rods

Of course they are. Have you ever tried tying up a boot with a push-rod, knackered or otherwise? Or what about tying on a bit of bike that's wobbling all over because a bracket has broken or the bolt made a successful break for freedom. Or various other uses? The universal tool, be it the MKII or Mk III version is so versatile, lightweight and easily stowable that it's more sensible to carry one in the tool kit.
