Primary Chaincase Seal
I am currently restoring a WD Matchless G3L (actually it is a mix of G3 and G3L parts) and after searching through the topics it seems that the primary chaincase is notoriously prone to oil leaks. Amongst the tips suggested was the use of a seal by G W Buckingham.
Can anyone supply his contact details so I might obtain one?
Can SAE 50 engine oil be used in the primary chaincase and up to which level should it be added?
Would contamination with the oil affect the function of the clutch plates?
Thanks in advance.
Regards,
Joseph

forget all the fancy seals, if the rest ain't right they still will not work
see here

& Do it the right way.
use 20 grade oil, just enough to touch the BOTTOM of the chain.
Too much oil especially heavy oil will make the clutch drag

Thanks for your all your help. I bought the bike in spares, and I am missing the stud, spacers, nuts and any washers which fix and are supposed to be inside the chaincase halves. AMC Classic Spares do not have the stud. Can anyone direct me where I can get the complete assembly or maybe someone has them second-hand for sale? The engine has 1941 G3L crankcases and the gearbox is a Burman CP. Thanks once again.

Joseph

Failing that try: www.jampot-spares.com
Look at: 900043 STUD/SPACER KIT 1946-48 MODELS , I have not checked if pre and post 46 were the same but I would be surprised if they are not, maybe someone who knows can advise, failing that compare the spares lists to check the part numbers.

The last time I checked with Mr Surbey they did not have them. As regards to Jampot Spares, I am not certain if 90043 will fit the WD G3L as there is no indication of individual part numbers. Would I have to be a member of the Spares Scheme to buy from Jampot spares?
Thanks,
Joseph

Hi Joseph,
no, you dont have to be a member to buy from the spares scheme, but if you think you will need quite a lot of parts, club members do get discount off spares purchased and it doesnt take long for the saving to more than cover the cost of joining the club. Plus, of course, you will receive the amazing 'Jampot' club magazine every month!

Top tip - if it needs more than 2 bolts to hold it on, its probably important...

Ive just had a thought..you must be a club member to post in here anyway?? Errr.. whoops!
Joining the spares scheme costs a fiver, I think, so the discount will very quickly cover that.
