59 G12 Seat

Post by snatchpiece »

Is this seat the same style as the original fitted to 1959 G12? I think that the distance between the front and rear mountings differs on certain models but I am not sure.

Is this a good buy?

I have an identical one on my 1957 G9 which certainly fits and may be the original seat pan that has been recovered. According to Mick Walker's 'Matchless- the complete story', That style of saddle was on the Matchless twin from the start (48/49) but not the AJS version, (at the start at any rate) and stayed with it until the 1960 model (end of 59) introduced the new two level dual seat which gave better seating for the pillion rider.

Had a look in Roy Bacon's book and there are it seems a plethora of seats for the marque but 1959 seems to be unique as they were changed for that year and then again for 1960. If you have a look at pictures of 1959 twins the dualseat is still flat as shown in your link but the cross bands are raised as small humps and the rear fixing is at the extreme end of the side flanges, because it seems to use the same top fixing bolt as the Girling unit, at least thats the way it looks in the pictures I have seen.

I would concur with pre 1956. My 1956 G80 has the more shallow type which was introduced along with the modified vertical seat tube, and I would think your 1959 should have the same. So it's a no from me!

The 59 seat is shorter at the front and meets the back of the tank, rather than resting on it as previously. It was still fixed at the back with seat screws, you just can't see them in Bacon's book as its just an illustrated drawing. Dave
