Lightweight or Heavyweight ??

Hello All,

Can anyone please let me know what does the term mean "light weight" or "heavy weight" motor?

I am trying to buy some parts and the parts catalog has these two engine types seperated. Which one would mine be?

I have a 1949 AJS 18. This would be the 500cc motor, but i have no idea if its a light weight or a heavy weight.

Hi Tim and welcome to the forum

Your bike will be a “heavyweight”, the lightweight were only manufactured after 1958, and were only available in 250cc and 350cc versions.
