Ok this may upset some of you as it "an't right" . But hopefuly it will get me a good few rides out this summer. Has any one tryed total loss ignition with standard points coil set up ? Approx how far can you get on a single battery charge (5 a/h battery).

Why should anyone be upset, sounds an interesting experiment. Why not measure the current draw of the coil and go on from there.

presuming you have disconnected the stop lamp which will probably draw more current than the coil in the course of a run?

It's worth mentioning that standard lead/acid batteries will soon lose the will to live if successively discharged completely followed by recharging. They like to be continually "topped up" and kept fully charged.

I learnt this to my cost by using second-hand car batteries to power an electrc fence. They don't survive for very long. Electric fences and caravans need a "leisure" battery, which is happy to be treated in this way (it costs a lot more of course).

You naughty man Greg, fancy using electric fences just to keep them poor "hoodies" off your property.
