Crown assembly

Post by mikeydpippin »

I notice the thread on the stem of the crown assembly is threadbare for the first 1/4" the adjusting nut is loose until past this distance,so I am going to attempt to tighten the bearings (to get the adjusting nut past this 1/4") and pull the stanchions through the crown with a draw bolt.
Anyone any ideas how to replace the crown stem (if the draw bolt does'nt work)other than weld another stem bar,in it's place. How is the stem connected to the bottom yoke.

The stem is a TIGHT press fit in the bottom yoke, for safety's sake, get another assembly.Edited by - Biscuit on 06 Mar 2008 10:35:07 PM

Tony Surbey has a selection of pre-used examples.

Crown assembly

Waiting for replacement crown,I have been making a drawbolt to pull the forks through the yokes.I have welded an old top nut ground back to the thread (allen key one)to a 1/2" threaded bar and will attempt to pull the stanchions through the yokes with a nut and washer.I will fit the top and bottom yokes first with the bearings in situ.
I am hoping the drawbolt will pull up squarely and the nut will not catch on the top yoke.
I have tried to get a threaded bar with the 1mm pitch thread but no luck.
Any more advise regarding this would be most welcome,Mike

That's the way to do it. Surely you tried the nut through the top yoke before welding?

Wind a suitable diameter of broom handle into the staunchion thread and pull it up high enough for the top nut to get a hold, using the pinch bolt to hold it while you unscrew the 'simple tool'.
Full extended, those springs don't have that much tension.
