hi
yes, unfortunately that the problem. In the manual it says "pull in (the lever) to retard". IN spindlers pictures above my mag is on the right and there it says pulled in is advanced.

Steve, some manuals cover more than one model, I think you may have been reading about the set up for the twins where the advance position is with the cable slack.Your set up should be as shown in the right hand pics.cable tight for full advance. At this position and with the piston 1/2 inch BTDC on the compresion stroke check the points are just about to open.If not then it looks as though the mag has been timed with the cam ring in the retarded position,

thank you laxy thats what i think has happened. I ll try it in the morning but as you said earlier i dont see why anybody would design it with the cable in tension when youve got things like cable stretch

Some manuals mention the 'slack cable' method, meaning the cable has to be on the left. But magnetos in that configuration are less common than the other sort, I don't know why. I eventually found one (at a cost) and I am more comfortable knowing the ignition stays advanced without constant checking that it hasn't moved. Also all the comp mags are that way round.

I've marked my A/R lever with a couple of dots so that I can see at a glance that the lever hasn't crept back.
Otherwise fiddling with it became a subconscious habit - like checking me flies......

I've a club calendar in all upstairs rooms

BTW - Glad to see that the calendar critics are fewer this year, but with a publication like that you're bound to get knockers.
