Hi Greg,
Possiblyit"s a demographic thing. If you looked back at population statistics there would be a numerical peak of boys who became of age to get a bike in 1966.That year , therefore, has a great importance.
Similar to one"s first girlfriend, perhaps? The year, the situation, a defining moment !
Best wishes, Chris

Apparently the Honda C70 become the C90 around this time, although '66 is mentioned, can't quite tie it down.
Apparently they were very popular. Strange tastes!

Honda c70 and 90 are still running around here in Malaysia, still very popular with the old guys. They never die and ALL parts are easily available.

I think this may be it. I sold three a few days ago (inc. 1966) and asked the buyer what vehicles he had. The reply was that they were all to mark memorable moments in his life - the winter of '63, Jimi Hendrix's death and the '66 World Cup win! A quick google for 1966 brought up the first page almost entirely devoted to the subject. So it's probably nothing to do with vehicles at all - isn't English eccentricity wonderful?
It isn't just elderly motorcyclists who try to recapture their youth then.

I think Chris has hit the nail on the head here, In 1966 the sons of WW2 service men would have come of age, 21 as it was back then.

I started my first job, age 16, tech apprentice, BSA, Armoury Rd, Birmingham and turned up on a G3LS converted to 500 with a barrel and head. There till they closed and threw us all out. By then had a G80CS in a Gold Star frame. Imagine the stick I got every morning turning up on it with a big flying 'M' on the timing cover. Should I be awarded a medal for ' Brand loyalty under extreme pressure' ???
