ENGINE BREATHING THROUGH TIMING CASE

Just returned to Malta from the Irish rally. My 1950 Matchless G3LS ran like a dream (1800 miles London to Kenmare, rally and back) only problem I experienced was that over 45mph the engine would breath through the timing case at the top past the magneto shaft. I haven't figured out why any ideas?
