Alu chaincase gasket

Post by TommoT »

What material is used for the gasket between the halves of the aluminium primary chaincase? If it is just paper I was thinking of cutting a batch myself.

Personally, I couldn't think of a better reason to say it! RTV Silicone it will be!...

I'm sure I don't need to say it , but I will any way! Clean and degrease both mating surfaces thoroughly. RTV is very good - but it can not work miracles!

...just to elaborate, is there a sealing arrangement around the gearbox/clutch axle? Or is it just an open hole as on the pressed steel ones?

If you do this, you will have a hell of a job when it comes to dismantling.

There should be a sliding seal at this point.Edited by - Biscuit on 30 Jun 2007 6:59:06 PM

I use the stuff that is sold for the purpose, haven't got clue on RTV.

I have found that degreasing, in the full sense of the term, is unnecessary, after cleaning off the old gasket or goo, a wipe with a clean rag will suffice. Indeed one of the makes I have used, Granville instant bike gasket, suggests oiling one face to facilitate removal.

Get it from the Club - 900646 Bike instant gasket £4.58.

Alu chaincase gasket

The alloy chaincase to bearbox has a sliding arrangement of two large disks crimped at the center with a ring. If not battered it does alright at deflecting most oil in & most water out.

As it fits somewhat loosly on the output shaft, I slip a large o-ring over the nose of the shaft behind the clutch sprocket. This keeps water from spashing into the clutch bearing.

Cheers, Don.
