Hi all, probably splitting hairs here but, from reading previous posts, is the general consensus of running the alloy headed singles for 30 - 45 seconds to warm up before setting the tappets to zero clearance still correct as the posts were almost 20 years old? I have included a mystery picture which will lead to a future post soon, best regards & Happy Easter,

I've always set the gap to 'just free to spin' with a cold engine. I can't recall ever having to readjust them after checking when the engine had been warmed, except maybe after 20 miles or so after having checked/tightened down the head bolts when a new head gasket had been fitted.

Thanks for the reply Neville, I have set then hot, and also set them cold, on setting them hot the engine was a lot quieter, but when checking after cooling down the pushrods were tight, I understand the importance of the valve being shut completely but wondered if any body had quantified the amount of expansion? my "Hot" was a 10 minute run, 30 - 45 seconds would give a different result so I'll give that a try, best regards, Ian.

The book says adjust when engine is 'warm', not hot - but exactly what warm means is not defined. Basically, if it is not too hot to do the job with bare hands, that is 'warm'.

Thanks Andrew, I'm sure someone will have a procedure for the task in hand, a quiet engine sounds lovely, but a barely seated valve would keep me awake (and worried) at night, best regards, Ian.

The way to think of it. When they are too tight and the bike is cold it is a pain to start the bike. DAMHIKIJDOK

As you're in Leicestershire it would be worth you popping along to the local section meets. Next one is next Wednesday at the Rising Sun in, Shackerstone, near Mkt Bosworth. You can get all sorts of question answered there!
