Lucas KN1 magneto

Post by jimh »

Need to replace the bearings on the Magneto, can somebody advise on how to get the bearing inner race off the Armature shaft, there no gap behind it to get a puller on.
Thanks.

The Lucas Workshop Service Manual is here in Christians Archive:

(It used to be on Groily's 'Brightspark Magnetos' website which currently seems to be 'disabled' and unavailable).

On the case Neville. Dunno exactly what's amiss yet (but there's work in hand on some of the files this w/end, which gives a clue). A lot of links seem to have gone awol temporarily. Ouch - and thanks muchly for highlighting it as I hadn't spotted it (been out on Mod 20 since sparrow's fart freezing myself to near-death at -5°)

As for getting the KN1's bearing inner off, this text and pix (which IS working) might help:
http://www.brightsparkmagnetos.com/cond ... mature.htm
Pulling the inner races really needs an extractor, preferably an 'Octopus' so-called, or a split profile clamping tool that will snugly grip the race without damaging it. A piece of plate, drilled to the o.d. of the inner race, with three or four radially-disposed round-nosed grub screws tapped in, plus a couple of bits of studding and T piece to do the pulling is a simpler option which does much the same but less elegantly.
(Some folk have found a wrap of thick single strand soft wire (eg copper) in the ball track, and then a firm squeeze in a soft jawed vice and a solid tap with a hammer on the end of the armature (protected by something sensible) can do it. But Extreme Care Needed and Stop if it's well-Stuck as races are brittle.)

Outer races can also be a PITA to extract, especially at the drive end. There's normally a pic of a simple 'camming-action' tool here
http://www.brightsparkmagnetos.com/workshop/index.htm under 'Other Useful Tools' - but, er, right now it won't come up. Moderate heat is always your friend here though.

Thanks for the info, both outer races fell out of their 'housings' when the Armature was removed, there was nothing left of the part of the insulating washers that I presume 'lap' over the outer race, will have a go at making up an extractor today.

That happens too - when, if one wants the thing out, one is lucky! The opposite can be hellish awkward sometimes!

And here is the link with pix of tools jimh. Working again I'm glad to say.

A simpler inner race puller is shown here, along with a slipring extractor (drawings):

Good luck!

Groily,

I fortunately don't have to delve into the electrics often but those tools look great and a useful resource for those prepared to DIY.

The EasyCap is great.
