Matchless G2 250 -1960 (air lever query)

Post by DRC »

Hi All

I asked a question before about the valve lifter lever that i have seen on other 250 models and it was pointed out that the 250 G2 does not have a valve lifter, but i keep seeing pictures of 250's with a lever on the right hand side of the handlebar which does not appear to be connected to the exhaust valve in rocker cover, so after some reading of the various literature available i noted that the valve lifter is on the left hand side handlebar and an air switch is mounted on the right hand side which is what i have been looking at, i have looked at my carb and can see only one cable coming from it although there is 2 cable connections, is this the place where the air control would fit? if so what sort of connection would i need on cable and when would this be needed during operation?

Cheers

The choke, or air slide, is a brass or mazak object that fits in the throttle valve/ slide with a spring, and the cable goes through the second hole / adjuster on the lid.
You can see what a typical slide looks like here:
https://amalcarb.co.uk/monobloc-series/ ... -kits.html
The slide is 'down' (and thus restricting the air supply to enrichen the mixture for cold starts), when the handlebar control is 'slack cable'. It is open when the cable is pulled taut, which is is its default position. You can see when it is 'down' because it is visible in the cut-out of the throttle slide if you peer down the air intake. When fully raised it must not impede air flow at all.
Many people don't worry about fitting air slides because a carburettor with a tickler on the float chamber is usually easy to get started.
If the slide and cable aren't fitted, the hole through which the cable enters the carburettor lid needs blocking off to avoid air coming in and affecting the mixture.
Air or manual ignition levers look broadly like this - there are many variants, left and right-handed: https://www.wwag.com/en/amal-style-air- ... ers-21-016
Decompressors usually look like this: https://www.feked.com/genuine-doherty-e ... n-end.html.
If a decompressor is fitted, then other bits are required at the rocker box, which needs to be of the sort to accommodate one. Whether 250 and 350 lightweight rocker boxes interchange, or whether any 250s had one as original, I fear I don't know.
Owners' manuals and workshop manuals for these and most other machines of the marque are available here, if you haven't been pointed there already: http://archives.jampot.dk/book/
