AMC gearbox sprocket a bit difficult to turn

Post by tippi11 »

Hello all,
I noticed that the gearbox sprocket on my G3 LS with AMC gearbox and clutch is a bit difficult to turn (rear chain removed). To be honest, I am not sure if this has been the case in the past, but in my opinion the sprocket should turn easily. Can anyone think of an obvious reason or advice on how the sprocket should “feel” when turned by hand  Thanks, Peter

I'm probably thinking through my bum but my first thought is
If you've only removed the chain to the rear wheel won't it still be going through the clutch? Maybe pull the clutch in and see if it's any easier.
My apologies if I'm just thinking nonsense, I tend to do that alot nowadays.

Steve: it is the same, with and without pulling the clutch.

All: I am about to remove the primary drive front cover, chain and clutch to have a look behind the clutch center. What do you think? Is this the way you would recommend for inspection? Any help appreciated, thanks Peter

My turn for daft response.

Assuming there is oil in the gearbox, is it SAE50, SAE30 or 20/50 or something else. The SAE50 (which I use) has quite a drag to it when cold.

I have a Norton 650SS that has an AMC gearbox (case is slightly different but the internals are the same). The recommended oil for this gearbox is a GL4 specification EP80w90 gear oil. The viscosity is considerably less than a straight SAE 50.
I'm from the Fens.... Gimme six.

re Johnny B: oil in my gearbox is "Classic Gear ZC 90", product of Kroon Oil, Netherlands.

I partly solved the problem in finding that the rear of the clutch centre scrubs on the driving gear/sleeve gear thus hampering the drive gear-sprocket unit to freely turn. Next step will be a closer insprection of the clutch center rear and spider (splines) ... Peter

You can get a new clutch centre (spider) with a more positive 'stop' on the splines. Makes a huge difference. I got mine from AMC Classic Spares but I think AMOC spares do the same part.
