Thank you to all the responses.
Having just spoken to Steve at AMC Spares he may well have found the problem,, when I tried to order new plates and following sharing some pictures with him. Apparently my clutch basket is of an earlier type (i.e. 1959 Type 1 I think he said) and has had the later type (original 1961 type) plates fitted. I now have on order the correct type and number of plates (5 plain and 4 friction); so we'll see what that does to the clutch operation once fitted.
