6 volt Indicators

Post by spookefoote1956 »

Hello again groovy cats. I'm helping a friend rewire his bike and he wants to put indicators on it. Yuk. However, is it possible to buy LED indicators which are suitable for a 6 volt positive earth system?

If so then could you point me in the right direction.?

Cheers, Chris

Hi Chris, I had a look at a few different kits and they seemed too bling for me, what I saw. I had a look at a friends bike which were ok but only came with 5w non led bulbs. He had upgraded the bulbs to 21w but I wanted Led. I bought a few led different bulbs to play with and they seemed ok for dull day but not sure you would be seen on a summers day. Our bathroom spotlights are 12v so I tried them and spot on (pun intended)! Reversible and encased in silicone too! All I’ve done is hot glued a piece of plastic water pipe in squashed slightly oval to match bulb. Then I made some crude reflectors out of cardboard and sticky back foil.
The handlebar switch is cheap one off flea bay and flasher unit is a non load sensitive type again cheap flea bay
Each bulb is rated at 2w so don’t need thick wire.

Well done Shaun, Valerie Singleton would be proud of you! When I did mine I had to fit an in-line resister to slow it down. I bought cheap chrome torpedo indicators and a friend converted them to LED.

One thing I love about this forum us the improv attitude which appears to be missing in this modern age. Can you confirm Shaun that the system is 6v and positive earth please.

Thanks Dave, Valerie Singleton, that takes you back!
The flasher unit I have seems to work like a timed relay, best way to describe it, no matter what load the speed seems to stay the same.
I wanted the lights to be small and blend in when you look at the bike, not be what you see. Also more important, see them in all conditions.
I've done a warning light on handlebars too as I regularly forget!
I think the bulbs are waterproof and most of the connections are in the headlamp , just the ones at the rear. If I did them again I'd probably put them joints under the seat area.
