Timing case gasket

Post by boris »

Should there be one? There was what looked like a factory made (well not cornflake packet) one on my 47 16M but I'm sure I read here there wasn't meant to be one. Did some get them and some not?

Thanks for that. Yes it was the chain case bit I was asking about. The one that was fitted when I got the bike certainly looked a production job and not something homemade out of gasket paper.

Spriddler is correct. There's no oil in the chaincase part (or shouldn't be). From memory, the chain is greaased. Check the manual. Do a search, top right of your Forum screen.

Yep, grease for the the chain. I've had a (nicked) large drum of Castrol LM for maybe 30 years which I've used for absolutely everything requiring grease (mixed with oil for the CP gearbox). Over time the excess grease gets thrown off the mag chain but I've never had any ooze out.
No oil will get in there unless the outer camshaft bush is considerably worn.

Got you there, Sprid. Oil did get into my mag chaincase because the blanking disc for the inlet cam had loosened; there was no real seepage as I did put a smear of Welseal on the faces. Blanking disc fixed now.
