I guess the compt bikes used that right angled bracket seen in the parts list Rob. It appears that did not change during the time it was changed on std road bikes. Don't know when all changes took place unless checked. I never knew the bent bracket also came in Black. I would have viewed them as rusty ones painted or home made. We all learn a bit more as time passes.
