When I had my 350 re-bored a few years ago I used feeler gauges to measure (approximately) the clearance between piston and bore. I recall 4.5 thou being the result (at rear lower skirt) and it has always run well (getting on for 10,000 miles now) and did not nip during the running in process. Have you tried to measure clearance?
