Engine shock absorber spring

Postby Andy E » Thu May 17, 2018 8:32 pm

My 1956 AJS 16MS was converted to 500cc by a previous owner about 30 years ago. I see from the parts list that there are different engine shock absorber springs listed for 350cc and 500cc models. Is there any way that I can confirm which spring is fitted to my bike?

If it's easy to get the nut on its a 350 spring if bloody difficult it's a 500 one. If you don't hear a knocking noise when you open the throttle quickly whilst on the move it's probably ok.

There are no untoward noises, so it’s probably the right spring then. I’ll prepare for battle with the spring when changing the engine sprocket. Thanks Clive.
