I'm in the process of re-assembling the non-qd rear hub on a '62 Matchless 350 hw. Looking at the diagram (attached) it shows the oil seal (21) on the speedo gearbox side placed outside of the cup for the oil seal (20) – is the order shown in the diagram correct?

Thanks, Sean

Yep that is correct, it looks wrong and is different from the brake side and has caught many restorers out over the years. Doesn't help that there is a drawing showing the oil seal in the wrong location just to confuse people. your illustration is the correct one so just re assemble as indicated.

Thanks Rob, 98% of me believed it must be correct but thought it better to check by ‘asking the audience'.

Rob. Please have a look at service sheets for full width hubs. no. 503 504 505. in the archives you will find them in Technical / service sheets. Do all these also show the oil seal in the wrong position. I have had a quick look, but you will see better knowing just what to look for.
