Boyer electronic ignition

Bike 1964 AJS 18 with alternator.
Boyer Kit fitted 00051
Fitting the kit both mechanically and electrically was very straightforward. The magnetic rotor fits perfectly on the taper vacated by the old advance mechanism.
This is mounted on the exhaust cam and thus rotates anticlockwise.
The timing was set to 35 degrees BTDC and the rotor set in position aligned with the appropriate hole.
With the plug connected and the bike kicked over a very good spark is produced.
However the bike is impossible to start. It spits back though the carb with a vengeance.
I have checked and rechecked the wiring and the timing position and I am at a loss and to where to go next. It seems to be firing 180 degrees out, is this possible?
Has anybody fitted one of these to a single before ? Any help would be much appreciated May have to go back to the old Lucas!
