Hello,

in my basketcase parts box, I found a metal that looks like the engine cover which sits on the engine plates. It has a metal half-circle-ring soldered on the inside. It might be a hand-made one, but I would like to know how the original cover is attached. Any idea or photo?

See the slot in the engine plate in your first photo directly above the left side of the slot there is detent in the plate, the original covers have deeper sides than yours and have a location tit either side which locates in the detent.

"tit" is an engineering term for a raised locating dimple or protrusion.

I can't find a photo at the moment.

If originalty does not matter you should still be able to use yours, it looks like a stud through the engine plates would engage with the washer providing it is firmley affixed, it may require a grommet to make up the difference in hole size and stop it rattling.

First, I will try to get a good attachment of the part that I have. It is nicely smooth and fits well over the plates.

I'd be tempted to use some sort of elastic band through the washer and attached below at some convenient point, it's more easily accessible than a bolt through the engine plates and would keep the cover under tension.

Yes, that could work or even a metal spring.

A small dab of silicone sealer on the side tabs will stop the cover going walkabouts and is invisible, but it is still easy to get the cover off.

Hmm. I have always thought of it as more of a slang engineering term than an official one.

You could try googling the term but I fear that the results wont help with your bike rebuild.
