There seem to be a good few AFS bikes around, what other branches of the MOD used G3`s ?

they were reputed to be the army dispatch riders favouite

I was thinking of the late 50`s early 60`s models, I have seen the army rigids, I used to have one a long time ago..

Home office used them also the Civil defence.

I see that a very nice looking AFS machine owned by Peter Short is shown on page 26 of the October Jampot magazine. It's good to see there is at least one other 1954 machine on the road as well as my sons bike, Reg NYV 312. Can anybody tell me the registration number of Peter's machines as the register in no longer being maintained and information on some machines is not complete.
Looking at the picture, the machine can only be one of a small number of AFS bikes with of this year with a registration beginning with an N. (NYV 3??).

NYV 252 to NYV 336 – Home Office contract two: 85 motorcycles – March 1954. Of these only 18 are listed on the register, with quite a few have little or no record of their current condition or location.

LYO 840 to LYO 847 – Initial evaluation supply contract for 8 motorcycles – June 1953.

WXR 551 to WXR 600 – Contract three: 50 motorcycles – July 1959
XYM 501 to XYM 690 – Contract four: 190 motorcycles – March 1960
391 ALD to 450 ALD – Contract five: 60 motorcycles – September & October 1960
450 BGJ to 493 BGJ – Contract six: 44 motorcycles – December 1960 & January 1961
525 BYV to 544 BYV – Contract seven: 20 motorcycles – July 1961

From 1959 to 1961 a total of 364 machines supplied.

If anybody else has information regarding the location of any of these machines it would be nice to hear from them. I see that Kettering classic Motorcycles currently have 408 ALD 1960 MATCHLESS G3 AFS for sale. http://www.kettering-classics.com/store ... duct=23861

Thats good info, my BIL has just collected XYM 657 today, painted black now but nice usable condition...

XYM 670 is well and living in sunny (usually!) Florida, as of December 2015.

Although sometime in the dim and distant has been painted black.
