I have to say that the thought of using a pipe wrench on the soft aluminium body of the jampot fills me with horror. For the sake of a few minutes work, I made this clamp from a piece of 2.1/2" x 1.1/4" hardwood (American ash, if you're interested). I used a 50mm 'Forstner Bit' to make the hole and lined it with a strip of 2mm thick nitrile rubber. One side was cut out and clamped with two pieces of 8mm threaded rod. With the 8mm nuts done up tightly, that held the body securely enough to allow me to fully tighten the bottom clevis.

As I also have two Record heavy steel sash clamps I might do this over winter.

Did fix them 35 years ago or so, probably no oil in them at all as I don't see any leaks. It was a hell of a job involving a large woodwork vice and heavy duty rope.

Pharisee - thanks v much for the pic of your wooden clamp. I think my first step is to knock up something similar for removing and subsequently tightening the bottom clevis.

I must say that having read all the helpful advice and articles, I have a certain amount of trepidation at the thought of dismantling the whole unit. There again, that's all part of the fun!

May I say many many thanks to everyone who has responded. This is the first time I have posted on the forum and I'm really grateful to you all for taking the time and trouble to share your experience and knowledge. I'm now much better equipped to launch into this jampot adventure!

For those who don t have sash clamps, you could use ratchet straps instead.

if you wish to fit and forget Ikon and a Brit company, the name of which escapes me but Steve Surbey can tell you, make rebuildable inserts you can fit inside the jampot housing, I think they are around £150 not cheap but done for good, kind regards

I inherited them from my Dad; he was a carpenter. Always wondered what I was going to do with them
