odd petrol tank

I have a standard looking mid 50s petrol tank. the only difference is that the cut out where the nose of the single saddle would fit has been filled with a plate and welded into position. It really is an excellent job and the plate started life 1/4 " thick. Covers up an odd looking gap and make it look tidy

Was this mod ever done by the factory?

Probably modified to fit an early rigid framed motorcycle, where the saddle was fitted on a post and the nose of the saddle was above the rear of the tank.

I've also got one of those tanks and wasn't even sure if it was AMC although it is painted silver with black lining and holes for mid 50 badges and knee grips.

Thanks Alfie
Im convinced the tank is a 'proper job' and also about mid 50s. Someone might dig up some more history of them one day
