Dave, the threadform is British Association (BA) widely used on electrical equipment. I think it was used in the US too. Unless you are a purist I suppose you could fit a suitable metric equivalent but the nut is square and holds against the band making it a little easier to fit.

It's a lovely story and I'm jealous of your acquisition. Although my AMC products have all been singles.

Just make sure the boy learns how to ride it right - something I'm still doing.

Thank you Johnny! He is a skilled dirt biker and has ridden my street bike a fair bit. He is also taking the Harley Davidson new rider course next weekend. Of course, the change in gear and brake levers will be a challenge for him, but he's up to it. The good news is....he's always been a great kid, very respectful, on a scholarship in college, and a great guy. I think that's why his Grandfather wanted him to have the bike. :-)
