Front forks, AJS 18 '54

The front forks at my AJS 18 '54 seem rather loose at bumpy roads, and I don't fancy dismounting my frontwheel anywhere else than in my garage, especially not while running.
How much play should I accept in the front forks?

Christian,
before you get into major works do drain out the fork oil and refill with the correct grade. this may be all you need to do to restore your faith in bumpy cornering.
