How is the exhaust downpipe fastened on?

Quick question:

There is a fixing boss on the exhaust downpipe under the engine, but it doesn't seem to line up with any obvious fixing point.

Is there supposed to be some sort of fixing bracket under there? There's nothing obvious on my bike (the exhaust is currently held on with a bodged clip further back that I want to get rid of...)

Mine has a cranked bracket but I don't know if it's the correct one. My exhaust isn't exactly original (except for the rust from the original oxidised metal ).

Perfect, ta!

I figure I can make something like that. I got a nice, shiny new downpipe from Armour's so I wanted to fit the new one properly. It just seemed odd that the boss is welded on to the exhaust in a way that doesn't line up with anything obvious...

Perhaps it's to give some flexibility between the vibrating engine at the head and the frame where the pipe fits.

For what its worth, the bracket is pt. no. 042541, perhaps Russell Motors have one. I could have a look and measure mine, should not be too difficult to bend something up.

Aha, I think I found something in the "mystery box o' bits":

I think that might be the right part (it looks like it should fit). Thanks for all the help!

If it helps here is mine in situ. You can see why it hasn't rusted away in 56 years :¬)
