For anyone still interested. I stripped the primary down and discovered that the engine sprocket was already 20 tooth. I understand that this is standard for bikes with 18" wheels. I decided to leave the primary as it is and get an 18 tooth gearbox sprocket and see how that goes. Today I went out and can say that the bike and me are much happier with this gearing and have no problems mixing with other traffic on the faster A roads. Not been on a motorway yet. I wish I'd gone for 19 tooth now. The overall ratio in top works out at approx 4.9:1 if my maths are correct. As someone said previously, the standard gearing was for road conditions back in the fifties but now you need some legs. It might not suit everyone but I like it.
