I am also a member of the British Motorcycle Preservation Society in Sheffield and a member has a 1960 AJS model 18s , his bike has a side stand but he does not know where the spring fits to the frame, there is a lug but it is on the nearside and not as expected on the offside, can anyone let me know where the spring end should connect to on the frame???
Thanks.

Re: side stand spring
2 holes in the offside frame rail , same as your M31 , type " side stand spring location " in the search box , you'll find lots of posts on this and I seem to recall at least one that had a photo of the frame rail showing the holes position .
