Boyer ignition on a '58 -on AMC 350/500

Post by petert120r »

I'm considering going down this route on my '58 altenator/coil ignition G80. I spoke to Boyer about fitting the kit they market for Tiger Cubs/C15's and they were honest enough to say they hadn't heard of it being done but on talking it through with them they concluded the base plate would be a direct swap but their rotor might require a sleeve/spacer to fit on the end of the camshaft. They can apparently supply drawings for this mod.

Coincidently I recently noticed an ad for a 1960 M18 with a Boyer fitted and I wondered if anyone in the Club has any experience of the conversion and has any feedback/comments?

Boyer have supplied me in the past with the single kit with a larger base plate and a drawing to show how the spacer/sleeve needs to be machined.

I supplied it on and never had any comeback so can only assume it worked.

I fitted a Boyer unit to a '66 model 18. the unit was MICRO MK3 (MKiii) Kit 00051. The instruction leaflet stated it was for unit construction single cylinder 4-stroke Triumph/BSA engines with 12 volt electrics and side points. I had to modify the circular PCB that replaces the points plate for some reason (problems making it fit, if I remember correctly) and cut it down & mounted it on an aluminium disc with screw slots to replace the original points plate. I'm very happy with the result.

Several members in our section have Boyer on their singles. I think they were supplied by Kirby Rowbottom. I think he makes modifications to fit the singles.

Kirkby Rowbotham does indeed supply them at £135 each ready to fit.
