1954 G18 Tank - Colour & Badge

Post by Asterysk »

I am just starting the renovation of my newly acquired 1954 G18. The tank is black with no badge or decal, there are badly filled in holes which I guess were for a tank badge. Almost certainly it has been repainted at some point

I've had a look at various pictures and have come to the conclusion that it requires a blue AJS badge but not sure whether it should be black or chrome tank, any suggestions gratefully appreciated (I am trying to keeo it true to original).

Also, I see there that the chrome tank had a black and gold surround to the blue tank badge, is this a Transfer or hand painted .

Just what bike have you got?? You say 1954 G18 , but there is no model G18, there is a 500 G80, which is a Matchless not an AJS. So to keep it true and original you must make sure what make, year and model the bike you have is. What are the frame & engine numbers.Edited by - Rob Harknett on 30 Sep 2012 1:23:38 PM

If the bike is a 1954 AJS model 18 500cc you will need a round plastic badge. You will also need the rubber pads and screws, these are sold by the club. The club do not sell the correct AJS badge for 1954.

A16153 / 1954 54/18S

This was the result from the dating service via the Club

I am in Luton this week (I live in Dubai) and was thinking about trying to pick up the necessary badge and transfer, if I go to the Spares location would I be able ot have a look through the available inventory ?

Thx Steve

In your bike parts list you will see the part number of the badge you want 2 of. Its blue & silver round plastic. BUT, the old type not 1957 onwards. This is all in the old messages if you search them, so after just one week I am typing this yet again. The old type badge up to 1956 had a nrrower outter silver band then the 1957 onwards bagge, so look at pictures here of circa 1954 t0 1957 bikes AJS or Matchless then 1958 1959 Some will have the wrong badges. So note how big the Outter silver bands are and you will see the difference. You need the badge with a narrower band.

You could get a set of transfers for the bike you do need to tell the people at the club HQ the part numbers you want. I assume you do have a parts list for your bike. That should ahd been one of the first things you got before you ever looked touched the bike. The correct badge is pat no. 018852 which I do not think the club stock, they may only have the later type with the wider silver band. rubbers are pt no 018853 and screws 000152.
But you may be wasting your time if you have not checked your bike is correct,For example, its no good getting correct badges if you have not got the correct tank to fit them on.Edited by - Rob Harknett on 30 Sep 2012 10:39:33 PM

suitably chastised I now have a parts list and I can see why you recommend it as the first port of call. I will update the list I sent the Spares CLub with the part numbers. Thank you for your advice and I do appreciate you tying it all over again for new owners like myself.

The parts cat. is in need of being updated
correct badges may now be in stock, you should be able to get a set of transfers by giving Make year and model, as the part number they have covers both AJS & matchless.
