Has the locking plate broken or is it missing?

Dave....I haven't yet dismantled the clutch unit, but will try to get this done tomorrow. Did manage to look in thru the holes and there was the nut and what looks like two washers. One could be a locking plate........i just came across a text that said installing the roller bearings "can be tiresome".....

Fitting the rollers is easy. Use a little dab of grease - just enough to hold them in place until you get the clutch on. Check the rollers are less than 1/4" long or they will end load and cause problems. The locking plate is a shaped plate which extends sideways and fits over one stud. You then turn up one side against a flat on the nut.

Well I have taken it apart and there is a home made locking type plate that was fitted to one stud, but it has no locking tab on it to lock the nut. So was in fact a waste of time........I will try and make another one with suitable tab.
AJScomboman I guess does not believe Daves comments about the roller bearings! I must admit I am in trepidation of geting them back in!

quote: but screwing in the thrust cup just results in pushing the spring pressure plate out toward the chain case cover
Since Roger explicitly mentioned movement of the pressure plate - so not of the whole clutch assembly - there was no indication that the clutch center nut would be loose, and Rob with the sealed lips had no reason to think of the clutch nut as cause .

So was I on my G9 re-build, however the use of grease and a steady hand and it went back together first time and no bits dropped, unlike the dismantle where the bearings pinged all over the floor!!!!

Thank you Albert........At that stage with chaincase cover on, I could not see that the entire clutch was loose.Edited by - fump on 26 Sep 2012 7:54:26 PM
