You can use any parallel shaft dynamo as long as you use the correct end cap on the gear end and replace the seal while you're at it.Do you have the original?

Hi Gilbert,

An E3N is a short (45 Watt) dynamo and an E3L is a longer (60 Watt) dynamo - there's an inch or so difference in overall length from memory. (An E3N has one screw in the side holding the coil (?) whereas an E3L has two, again only from memory). Don't worry too much about the other letters at the end of the part code as they're mostly insignificant.

This Dutch website has useful photos of all different types which is useful for reference:

specifically this page:

If you're bike will take the longer 60W output dynamo then it would seem a little daft to restrict yourself with a smaller output 45W one (although it should fit I guess). Check out what was standard fitment for your bike in the owners manual / spares list etc.

Buying a dynamo on eBay seems a bad idea to me - you have no way of knowing how good it is and how long it will last if it does work to start with. Also they tend to go for way too much money. Better bet is to buy a ready reconditioned one from a specialist, known good and working and usually with a year or two guarantee. My advice would be to speak to Tony Cooper - see dynamo / magneto thread under 'recommendations' section of forum.

Regards, James
